I used the gouache and ink technique I've used a lot recently. You paint the image in gouache leaving blank paper where the lines will be then cover the whole image in black india ink. Then with the spray attachment in the sink wash off the paint and ink so that you're left with a color stain and black in somewhat random places. It usually requires some extra watercolor and going into photoshop to clean it up a bit.

DeleteThat's a pretty cool spin to traditional art techniques! I remember doing an india ink wash long ago in art class, but that was with wax pastels :)
